Sand Dunes Swimming Pool and RV Park
During the early 1930’s hot water was struck near Hooper while drillers were exploring for oil. The hot well water enters our pool at 118° and the pool’s temperature is maintained between 98°-102° depending on the season. The hot water well also heats the nearby greenhouses where hydroponic/organic tomatoes and cucumbers are grown. Before being reopened in August 1995, the “Hooper Pool”, as affectionately called by locals, was last used for swimming in 1978. Catfish were raised in the pool in the early 1980s, and then the pool sat unused for about 10 years. As the pool was deepened in the summer of 1995, three pool layers were unearthed. Early visitors swam in a dirt-covered board pool and later renovations included two cement floors, the current pool being the third.
The recent addition of an enclosure at one end of our facility assures comfort from the weather and covers the baby pool at the same time. One of the newest projects is the completion of a 25 person therapy pool maintained at 105° to 107°. Sand Dunes Recreation is now also offering RV spots with water and electric hook-ups. Nightly rates are $25 + tax and weekly rates are $130 + tax for six days. Campers are charged only $3 per person to swim.
The Pool offers a full line of delicious concession items, produce from the greenhouse, and pool toys. Tables and grills, plus volleyball, basketball, tetherball, a horseshoe pit and a large grassy area and creek for the kids, offer lots of great family fun.
March 1 through November 30, the pool is open daily from 10am to 10pm, except Thursdays when it is drained and physically cleaned. December through February, the hours change from 1pm to 8pm. Swimming lessons and aerobics are offered. Call 719.378.2807 for further schedule information.
Valley View Hot Springs
Overlooking the northern end of the San Luis Valley is a hot springs that many people return to again and again because of its restful qualities. There are no signs on the highway advertising this resort—word of mouth has always been enough to bring new people to visit. What is so special about Valley View Hot Springs? Could it be the clothing-optional policy allowing people to experience nature “au natural”; the gravel-bottomed, spring-fed ponds scattered on the hillside, each with a spectacular view of the Valley; or the friendly, laid-back atmosphere that allows for total relaxation? It is all of these and more.
Valley View has been in operation since the early 1900’s when the miners from the Orient Mine came down to relax and soak in the healing waters. Many of the buildings on the grounds date from that period. In an effort to preserve the special nature of Valley View, Neil and Terry Seitz, owners since 1979, have set up a land trust to perpetuate their vision of how they would like the springs to remain. Orient Land Trust has been in operation since March 2001 and will take over the running and maintenance of the hot springs in January 2004.
If you seek a place to get away from the bustle of the city, the noise, the pollution, Valley View is the place for you. Many visitors marvel at how rested they feel after soaking in the waters and exploring the many hiking trails in the area. We encourage you to learn more about Orient Land Trust—your donations can help Valley View remain the pristine environment that so many people have enjoyed for so many years.
