5th Annual Crestone Music Festival
Another good show on the way!
by Tom Dessain

The 5th Annual Crestone Music Festival will be held August 9 & 10 at the Challenger Golf Club in Crestone, Colorado. This year’s festival is shaping up to be the best yet. We are very excited to announce that the headliners are Michelle Shocked on Saturday night and Tony Furtado on Sunday night.
Michelle Shocked is a Grammy nominated, contemporary/American roots musician. Her musical styles are distinctly original. She is able to blend Pop, Country, Blues and Folk with surprising ease. She tours nationally with a 5 piece band which is known for their super tight, high energy and fearless performances. Opening for Michelle is Ryan Shupe and the Rubber Band. This is one of the funniest bands I’ve ever seen, playing a flavorful blend of what can best be described as Comedy/ Country/ Bluegrass/ Blues.
Tony Furtado is accepted as one of the major innovators on the acoustic scene today. Already a world-class banjo player, Furtado has devoted himself to mastering slide guitar and pushing his touring band into new frontiers. They fuse their traditional and technical expertise with modern beats and rhythms. The Tony Furtado Band gets audiences moving with their Roots-Rock, Blues, Celtic, Funk and World beat grooves.
The Festival is a two-day, two-stage, multi-genre event featuring local, regional, national and international artists. Musical genres vary between Jazz, Classical, Celtic, Country, World Beat, Choral, Bluegrass, Blues, Salsa, Rock, Reggae, Folk, and Acapella. In addition, the Festival has featured theatre, dance, percussion, and poetry performances. Complimenting the musical lineup are a wide range of activities for both youth and adults, including pie eating, limbo and wood chopping contests, fireworks, a hot air balloon, a 5K run, a climbing wall and live alpacas.

Local and regional vendors will display an array of arts, crafts, and food from around the world. Following on last year’s workshop success, ideas for 2003 workshops include vocal, song writing, dance and different instruments. New to the Festival this year will be a free comedic performance by the Crestone Community Theatre Company, Friday night August 8 at 8pm. So come on out for Free Friday, the laugh’s on us. We are continuing to limit the attendance of the festival to 1,500 a day in order to maintain a safe, family-friendly atmosphere, so get your tickets early. We are instituting an early bird special for ticket prices this year. Tickets are $15 a day until June 15. After June 15, the price will be $20 a day or $35 for the weekend. Three-night weekend camping will be available for $15.
For more information and tickets, please call 1-888-mtn-music 888-686-6874 or visit our website at www.crestone.org/cmf. No pets or outside alcohol allowed. The Festival would like to thank the Colorado Council on the Arts, the Gay and Lesbian Fund for Colorado, the El Pomar Foundation, the Saguache County Tourism Board and Valley View Hot Springs for their support.
